If your business still relies on QuickBooks Desktop, there is an important change coming later this year. Intuit has announced new pricing for QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions, payroll services, and ProAdvisor products, with most increases taking effect for renewals beginning October 1, 2026.
For many businesses, this isn’t simply a software price increase. It is another reminder that QuickBooks Desktop continues to evolve toward a subscription-based platform, and that now is a good time to evaluate whether your current accounting system is still the right fit for your business.
At QB-LA, we work with businesses throughout Southern California that use both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online. Our goal is to help clients make informed decisions based on their operations, not simply react to software changes.
What’s Changing?
Beginning with subscription renewals on or after October 1, 2026, several QuickBooks Desktop products will see annual price increases.
QuickBooks Pro Plus will increase from $1,149 to $1,351 per year for a single user. Additional user licenses will increase from $230 to $270 per user.
QuickBooks Premier Plus will increase from $1,609 to $1,891 annually, with additional users increasing from $345 to $406 per seat.
QuickBooks Desktop Accountant subscriptions will increase from $1,799 to $2,249 annually, while ProAdvisor Premier and Enterprise Bundles will also see significant price adjustments.
QuickBooks Desktop Payroll subscriptions are increasing as well. Basic Payroll will rise from $640 to $690 annually, while Enhanced Payroll will increase from $805 to $870 per year. The per-employee monthly fee remains unchanged at $7.
Legacy Enhanced Payroll customers will also see higher annual renewal prices beginning December 1, 2026.
These changes affect renewal pricing only. Existing customers will see the new rates when their subscription renews after the effective dates.
Desktop Is Still Supported, But the Direction Is Clear
Back in 2024, Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Plus products. Existing subscribers can continue renewing their licenses, but new customers are no longer able to purchase these Desktop editions.
Since then, Intuit has continued investing heavily in cloud-based accounting solutions, workflow automation, artificial intelligence, and integrated financial management tools.
That does not mean every business should immediately abandon QuickBooks Desktop. In fact, many companies continue to operate very successfully using Desktop. However, it does mean that business owners should periodically review whether staying on Desktop remains the most cost-effective and productive option.
Should You Stay on Desktop or Move to QuickBooks Online?
There is no universal answer.
Some businesses have highly customized Desktop workflows, specialized inventory requirements, or internal processes that continue to work extremely well.
Others benefit significantly from moving to QuickBooks Online, especially when they need remote access, collaboration with their accountant, automated bank feeds, integrated payroll, or connections with other cloud applications.
Growing businesses with multiple companies or increasingly complex reporting needs may also benefit from newer solutions designed for larger organizations.
The important point is that software decisions should be based on your business, not marketing messages or pricing announcements.
Don’t Make the Decision Alone
Every year we speak with business owners who either switched software too quickly or waited until they were forced into making a rushed decision.
Neither approach usually produces the best outcome.
At QB-LA, we help clients evaluate their accounting systems objectively. Sometimes that means recommending they continue using QuickBooks Desktop. Other times, it makes financial and operational sense to migrate to QuickBooks Online or another solution that better supports future growth.
Because we work with bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, tax preparation, and QuickBooks consulting every day, we can help you understand the real costs, the migration process, and the long-term impact before you make a decision.
QB-LA offers bookkeeping and biusiness support for businesses just like yours.
If your QuickBooks Desktop subscription is coming up for renewal later this year, now is an excellent time to review your options. QB-LA can help you compare the costs, understand the benefits of each platform, and develop a plan that fits your business rather than forcing your business to fit the software.
