If you’ve been using QuickBooks for years, you may have heard that QuickBooks Desktop has been discontinued, replaced by QuickBooks Online, or is no longer available.
That’s not quite accurate.
Yes, QuickBooks is still available as a desktop product in 2026. However, Intuit has made some major changes to which versions are available to new customers and how existing QuickBooks Desktop customers are supported.
At QB-LA, we work with businesses using both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, so this is a question we are hearing more often. Here’s what business owners need to know.
Can I Still Buy QuickBooks Desktop in 2026?
Yes, but the primary QuickBooks Desktop product available to a new U.S. customer is now QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
Intuit stopped selling new U.S. subscriptions for several of its traditional Desktop products after September 30, 2024, including:
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll
This does not mean that Intuit eliminated QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise continues to be available to new customers. Intuit currently describes Enterprise as its flagship Desktop product and offers Enterprise subscriptions to both new and existing customers.
So, when someone asks us, “Can I still buy QuickBooks Desktop?”, the answer is yes, but your options are different than they were a few years ago.
What If I Already Have QuickBooks Desktop?
This is where a lot of the confusion comes from.
If you already subscribe to QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, or Desktop Payroll, Intuit’s decision to stop new sales does not automatically cancel your existing subscription.
Intuit says existing QuickBooks Desktop Plus and Desktop Payroll subscribers can continue renewing their subscriptions. They can also continue receiving applicable product updates, security updates, and support under their subscription terms.
In other words, stopping sales to new customers and discontinuing the product for existing customers are two different things.
That distinction is important for businesses that have years of accounting history, custom reports, inventory processes, job costing, or other workflows built around QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks Desktop Is Changing, Not Simply Disappearing
There is another change that has caused some confusion.
Intuit has moved away from the old model of releasing a newly numbered QuickBooks Desktop product every year. QuickBooks Desktop Plus 2024 and QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise 24.0 were the last annual platform releases.
Instead, Intuit says supported Desktop products will receive improvements through ongoing updates rather than requiring a new annual platform release.
More importantly, Intuit currently states that QuickBooks will continue to have two product platforms: Online and Desktop, with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise serving as its flagship Desktop product.
That’s considerably different from saying “QuickBooks Desktop is gone.”
What Happened to QuickBooks Desktop 2023?
This is another area where businesses need to be careful.
Support for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 ended after May 31, 2026. This affected QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2023, Premier Plus 2023, Enterprise Solutions 23.0 and several related 2023 products.
The important issue isn’t simply whether the program will open on your computer. An unsupported version can lose access to services businesses rely upon, including QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, payments, online banking and bank feeds, technical support, and critical security updates.
If you’re still running QuickBooks Desktop 2023, this is a good time to have someone review your installation, subscription status, company files, backups, payroll requirements, and options for moving forward.
Should I Switch From QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?
Not necessarily.
As a longtime QuickBooks ProAdvisor, I don’t believe businesses should migrate simply because a different product is newer or because they’re told that everything needs to be “in the cloud.”
The right QuickBooks platform depends on how your business actually operates.
QuickBooks Online can be an excellent choice for businesses that want easier remote access, cloud-based collaboration, automatic updates, and integrations with other online business systems.
QuickBooks Desktop, particularly Enterprise, can still make sense for companies with more involved inventory, reporting, job costing, established Desktop workflows, or other requirements that would make a migration unnecessarily disruptive.
The question shouldn’t be, “Which version of QuickBooks is better?”
The better question is, “Which version works best for the way my company keeps its books?”
Can I Buy an Old Copy of QuickBooks Desktop Pro Online?
This is one area where I recommend being particularly cautious.
A Google search for QuickBooks Desktop may turn up websites offering “lifetime” copies of QuickBooks Pro, Premier, Mac, or other older Desktop editions.
Intuit specifically warns customers that it no longer offers new non-subscription or “lifetime” licenses for QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Mac. Intuit also warns that unauthorized products advertised online may be fraudulent or unsupported.
If you’re trying to stay with QuickBooks Desktop, don’t purchase an old license simply because a website claims it is a legitimate permanent copy.
You may end up with unsupported software, an invalid license, security concerns, or a product that cannot use the Intuit services your business requires.
QuickBooks Desktop vs. QuickBooks Online: Don’t Make the Decision Based on Marketing
For an established business, moving accounting systems isn’t the same thing as changing word processors.
Your QuickBooks company file may contain years of customer and vendor information, payroll history, reconciliations, inventory, accounts receivable, accounts payable, custom reports, memorized transactions, job costing, and other records that are central to operating the company.
Before moving from Desktop to Online, or from an older Desktop installation to Enterprise, we recommend reviewing what you actually use in your current QuickBooks setup.
Some businesses can move to QuickBooks Online very smoothly. Others discover that a workflow they’ve depended upon for years doesn’t translate exactly the way they expected.
That’s why the migration decision should begin with the books and the business, not with the software.
